Right Into The Light of Christ | Up From The Water
About The Poem
Up From The Water is a Christian poem about baptism and one of the four poems selected for publication alongside Phoenix: Ash to Bloom and Fractured in Crafton Hills The Sand Canyon Review 2025 Edition. It reflects the new life a believer has upon emerging from the water. The day of my baptism is one of the most significant moments of my life.
Up From The Water is the first bilingual poem I wrote, and takes inspiration from one of my favorite songs, Renací (Reborn) by Evan Egerer: “Up from the water took my first birth; this is new life cuando renací.” Up From The Water tells the story after the fracture: “Shadows no longer surround me; New Life welcomes me home.” Baptism is a public declaration of faith and an act of obedience: Porque nací de nuevo: I am a new creation.“

Up From The Water
Up from the water, New Life embraces me.
Into the light, cleansed from what was.
Shadows no longer surround me;
New Life welcomes me home.
Salvador, my Savior: Jesus.
Called from the grave, no return.
Porque nací de nuevo: I am a new creation.
Christ broke the chains of my enslavement.
He experimentado un renacimiento.
Condemned. Forgiven. New Life embraces me.
