An Inspiring Christian Poem | For When I Am Weak
About The Poem
For When I Am Weak is a poem inspired by one of my favorite Bible verses (2 Corinthians 8-10) and was published in San Bernardino Valley College’s Phineas Literary Magazine, Spring 2025. 2 Corinthians 8-10 is the first Bible verse I connected with and the first verse to really speak to my heart. I connected so much with Paul’s experience and felt Jesus speaking to me through his words to Paul: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” For When I Am Weak is a testimony to the comfort I found in 2 Corinthians 8-10. “For when I am weak, my strength remains; How could I be weak when I am strong?”
During our times of weakness, God’s grace is enough to keep and sustain us. This verse comforted me when I was at my weakest. I was severely depressed and struggled with my mind. I wrote this poem for myself before I thought to share it. All of my poems start that way. They start as personal reflections and observations. Everything I write is important to me in some way. I won’t write, submit, or publish anything not true to what I believe. For When I Am Weak began as a reflection of my favorite verse from the Bible and became one of my first-ever published poems.

For When I Am Weak
For when I am weak, my strength remains.
How could I be weak when I am strong?
Trial’s exhausted hands,
Could no longer restrain a Phoenix’s blazing heart.
Grace is a neighbor on Feeble Avenue.
Mercy is a friend on Compassion Boulevard.
Encouragement descends like a dove upon my heart.
A nest constructed by love’s breath and hope’s arms.
A vulnerable soul with five stones and a sling;
Goliath’s robustness could not withstand a warrior’s zealous heart.
The weak could shame the strong.
Even feeble hands could demolish the defenses of Babylon.
Grace will rest upon the hearts of the weary, and
Mercy will give strength to a shattered soul.
My strength remains eternal.
Scriptures
Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong (2 Corinthians 12:8-10)
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16)
He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength (Isaiah 40:29)
For he was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you we will live with him by the power of God (2 Corinthians 13:4)
