Hope and Restoration | Waters Running Still
About The Poem
Waters Running Still draws inspiration from the psalms and much of it’s imagery is inspired from the images specifically in Psalm 23: still waters, valley lows, grace, and spiritual renewal. There’s a balance of vulnerability and sense of trust and reassurance. What makes this poem beautiful and unique to anything I have written so far is the way the prayer answers itself through the act of remembering. The poem begins with a set of petitions (the prayer/requests) and ends with declarations (remembering). Waters Running Still is anchored in the grace that restores both color and breath.

Waters Running Still
Guide me to the waters
running still;
Hide me in the shadow
of Your wings.
Cover me in the colors of
Your grace;
Lead me through all
my valley lows.
Listen to the prayers
of my heart;
The ones I pray when
my lips don’t move.
Draw me close to you
when I resort to distance;
Wrap me in your arms
of Your steadfast love.
Remind me of a hope
and brighter future;
You open doors my mistakes
can’t close.
When my mind begins to cloud
and my colors start to dull
— Lead me to the waters
running still.
Scriptures
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul (Psalm 23:1-3)
Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings (Psalm 17:8)
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words (Romans 8:28)
I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut (Revelation 3:8)
