Phoenix: Ash to Bloom is a Christian poem about spiritual renewal and rebirth (published in The Sand Canyon Review 2025 Edition). The Phoenix (a mythical creature) symbolizes rebirth and renewal. The idea of the Phoenix bursting into flames and rising from its own ashes is such a beautiful way to describe the renewing of a spirit: “Beauty from ashes; Ashes to bloom.”

We wouldn’t normally see ashes as something beautiful. God has a special way of making things beautiful in His time (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Ashes typically represent total ruin and destruction, but in Phoenix: Ash to Bloom, they symbolize the beauty of finding hope and new life: “Washed in forgiveness; A weight lifts off burdened shoulders.”

Beauty from ashes; Ashes to bloom.
Baptized in the love of my Father;
A love unconditional.
Washed in forgiveness;
A weight lifts off burdened shoulders.
My soul rises: Released from sin’s influence.
Hope and New Life are found in Bloom.
Shame and guilt left alone in the ash;
Blown away by Life’s breath.
A soul once lost: Now Eternal.
